In general, a custom chef coats is white and double breasted, typically made of thick cotton layered in two layers. The fabrics used to make chef’s jackets are typically woven and composed of 100% cotton or a blend of cotton and polyester. Wearing the appropriate uniform is just one way to ensure food safety. All chefs must wear proper protective clothing in food preparation areas at all times. This ensures that any contaminants carried on normal clothing, such as pet hairs or dirt, will not contaminate the food. Most traditional restaurants, especially French restaurants, require the white chef’s coat as part of the uniform and as a practical chef’s garment. The thick cotton cloth protects from the heat of stoves and ovens, as well as from the splattering of boiling liquids.
